Independent and Determined

Roy Cho has never run for office before. A 33 year old business attorney who lives in Hackensack, he’s running for Congress to do something about the gridlock and moneyed special interests that are making Washington more dysfunctional than ever.

According to Roy:

“When I first told my friends I was running for Congress, they told me I was nuts. They said that Washington is just too broken to get anything done. I’ve heard the same thing from voters for over a year. It’s not an exaggeration to state that America’s future depends on us finding a way to make Washington work.”

Classic American Success Story

The son of immigrants who came to the United States with little more than the conviction that hard work and determination could lead to success, Roy was raised to believe in what brought his parents to this country – the promise of America.

According to Roy:

“As a young immigrant with a family to provide for, my dad was able to secure a loan through an independent state agency in New Jersey, which is how he got his foothold in business. My father raised me to believe there is a magic in this country that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world that gives the powerless opportunity and helps underdogs defy great odds.”

Brown, Georgetown Law, Stints in Public Service

A scholar athlete and product of New Jersey public schools, Roy graduated with honors from Brown University (where he was a starter on the Division I wrestling team) and earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center where he served as the Editor in Chief of the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal. After college and during law school, Roy also worked in government.

According to Roy:

“I’ve always had an interest in public service and was lucky to have the opportunity to work in the New Jersey Governor’s office, for a U.S. Senator on Capitol Hill, and for an executive at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In all of these positions, I learned a lot about the problems and possibilities of government at all levels and how to get things done for people.”

An Attorney Who Works with Businesses

Currently on a leave of absence from the New York office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP to campaign for Congress, Roy has been a business and private equity attorney for the past five years. In this role, he uses his understanding of the increasingly complex corporate and public-private partnership arenas to help guide clients in the United States and throughout the world.

According to Roy:

“We need to harness the entrepreneurial ingenuity and spirit of the private sector to solve America’s interconnected problems. Partnerships between business and educational institutions and joint public-private investments in alternative energy, environmental protection, and new modes of transportation can create the jobs we need now and in the future to get our stagnant economy moving again.”

A Heart for People

Roy has been a pro bono legal counsel to community development organizations serving low-income areas and urban environmental groups. He also serves as a board member of New Jersey Needs You (a nonprofit that focuses on mentoring first generation college students from low-income backgrounds) and the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative (a nonprofit that provides free medical care to working people in need).

According to Roy:

“My parents taught me that caring for others is fundamental to living successfully. It’s part of who I am, a basic value I will take to Washington. I believe that to govern well there must be a concern for individual needs and rights in combination with an equal concern about what’s best for the larger community.”
