Next Chapter Learning

My wife (Jenn 33) and I (28) started Next Chapter Learning late in 2008, right when the recession was at it's height, but launched Feb. 2009. Man, has it been a crazy adventure!
I was working at another company in sales and customer service although my entrepreneurial spirit was dying to get out, and my wife was a real estate investor / radio remote assistant with a few houses in a very low income area that was not bringing in any income. Just enough to cover the mortgage payments of $500-$750 a month. The properties had done well for my wife until the recession hit in 2008, which is also the year we got married. It had nothing to do with me I promise! :-)
In December 2008 when the recession was high, EVERY single tenant of ours quit paying, and we were stuck with 4 houses and no rent coming in to cover the mortgages. We worked hard to keep the houses from going into foreclosure, and when all was said and done we had spent all our savings and were left with about $35 in our bank account. Sure I had a paycheck coming, but that money was already spent to cover additional bills.
One day when I was working in sales trying to close a client, he told me about a competition his company was having teaching people how to start a business online, covering everything from A-Z. The competition was free, and the winner would have a business making money AND win a brand new Corvette. So with $35 in my bank account, a crazy entrepreneurial drive needing to be satisfied, I thought, well, what do I have to lose?
So I entered the competition 2 months late, and begin catching up by watching all their recorded video training material. Then one day when I was working on the project my wife saw the picture of the corvette on the screen (which was part of their competition website design), and asked me what I was doing. So, I told her about the competition and the possibility of starting a business online and winning a Corvette.
So, long story short, we both begin working super hard daily together (as newly weds who had only known each other for 6 months before meeting online and getting married) to win this competition which I believe 68,000 people had entered from all across the world. We were learning everything from how to outsource the creation of a website, how to drive traffic to your site, how to create products, how to find niches, how to set up your shopping cart etc.
We only had about 3 weeks to come up with an idea for a product, because we had a lot to do to catch up with the others competitors. We brainstormed all kinds of things but nothing great, and then one day at church I asked a friend of my wife's who is an awesome hair bow maker, was it super difficult to make hair bows? She said, no not really, but you've got to know the exact steps so they come out perfectly.
So I began thinking about all the little girls I've seen with hair bows, how expensive they are, and began searching to find out if anyone was interested in learning how to make them. I did some keyword research (something else I learned in the competition) and found that a good bit of people where searching for ways to make hair bows. So without hesitation I hired our friend, and we began creating a course teaching step by step how to make bows.
Within a month we finished and launched the new course and website, and a few months later at the end of the competition my wife and I had won! We had a business from home making great money, and won a BRAND new black Corvette. We beat out all 68,000 people from across the world with no experience initially!
I "retired" from the corporate world at age 25 after about 6 months of winning the competition, and now we both focus full-time creating several different "How-To" informational products. We try to create new products every couple of months.
Today it's still just my wife and I, and we make six figures (yes 6 figures!) a year having a blast together. PLENTY of challenges along the way, but man has it been an amazing awesome and blessed ride!
Also, over the years we've had a LOT of people asking how we make money online, and we've given away a ton of advice, but it's hard to explain everything with the little time we normally have with each person. So, we created an AWESOME course teaching anyone who is interested the exact same things that we do to start and grow a business online in any niche and in any industry. We cover everything from A - Z, and only charge $97 for the course so it's super affordable to anyone. We've yet to actually market this course though, just when friends or anyone ask us for help we can refer them to the course.
Here is a picture of my wife in our brand new Corvette at the dealership the day we took it home! http://makemoneyinpajamas.com/images/Jenn_Car.jpg
Oh, and one thing I didn't talk about was the ability we finally had to take a honeymoon together over a year after we were married because of our new business, and the finances and freedom it provided. We traveled around the nation for 3 months in the Corvette!
Thanks for the opportunity to share our story.

Thanks,
Xan and Jenn Spencer
