Look up the blue book pricing on the yacht of your choice with NADA Guides online. You can also check a web-based boat value directory like BUCValu (see Resources). Estimate the cost of maintaining any extra amenities like cabins and toilets. Add to that an estimate cost of gas, depending on the size of the boat and engine, to figure out a realistic overall cost for the yacht.

Get pre-approved by a lender for a marine loan, a free service. Lenders will take a look at your debt to income ratio, which should be below 35 percent. Only use a marine lender, not a bank, because most banks don't understand the yacht lending business as well and don't lend money for more expensive yachts.

Have the yacht inspected. The inspector should check for structural or mechanical damage that the owner may have failed to mention or didn't know about. The inspector should also be able to tell you whether or not the yacht will need repairs in the near future.

Get estimates on repairs if they will be needed. Ask the owner about deducting the price of repairs from the price of the yacht if possible.

Set a price on what you're willing to pay for a yacht; write down this price and stick to it. Let the owner or dealer know what you wish to spend, and do not exceed your budget unless the owner throws in extras that make it a deal worth grabbing. Give the owner time to consider your price.

Discuss adding to the deal by providing extras like life jackets, an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) or even yachting lessons.

Settle on a price and purchase your yacht. If you cannot come to an agreement, move on to the next yacht.
