Both Frank Lloyd Wright and Kandinsky were inspired by basic organic shapes such as a circles found in nature. Wright’s spiral design recalled a nautilus shell, with continuous spaces flowing freely one into another. Kansinky’s Dominant Curve, 1936 exemplifies the artist’s use of abstract organic shapes. In his treatise, On the Spiritual in Art, 1911 Kandinsky wrote about the ability to elicit specific responses from viewers of his canvases through the evocative power of carefully chosen and dynamically interrelated colors, shapes, and lines. The inner vision of an artist, he believed, could be translated into a universally accessible statement.
