 Try Philadelphia for a day. There are many easy ways to get there from NYC. Take the Amtrak in the morning from Penn Station, or, if you're on a budget and are not in a hurry, you can use NJ Traniste to SPETA, to Philly's 30th Street station If you take the direct train it is an hour and 40 minutes. You can see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Run up the stairs of the Art Museum and do your very own "Rocky Photo". Eat a Cheesesteak for lunch and go shopping on South Street. Check out the trolley tours for an abbreviated tour of the city. Get your Amtrak back to NYC in the evening. Yes, it will be a long day, but if you may not get to the Northeast again for a while, it's a good side trip.
