No matter how much or how little money you have in your checking account, it is critical that you keep a close eye on your balance. Knowing how much you have to spend is the best way to avoid bounced checks, overdrafts and the associated charges these mistakes bring with them. Taking the time to balance your checkbook faithfully every month will help you steer clear of trouble and maintain your good financial reputation.

1
Review your bank statement and circle the amount of interest you earned, along with any maintenance fees charged by the bank. Add the amount of interest you earned to the balance in your check register and subtract any fees.

2
Go through each transaction shown on your statement and mark that item off in your check register. Open your check register and place a check mark next to each check, ATM withdrawal and deposit recorded on your statement. Write down any items that are shown in your check register but not on your statement.

3
Write down the ending balance shown on your bank statement. Add any deposits that were not included on the bank statement. Subtract any checks that have been written but not cashed.

4
Compare the total you calculated in step 3 to the running balance in your check register. If the two numbers do not match, you probably forgot to record a transaction in your checkbook. Go through your receipts and ATM withdrawals for a transaction in the amount of the discrepancy. For instance, if your balance is off by $6.23, look for a receipt showing that exact amount. Debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals are easy to overlook, so that is a good place to start your search.
