유명화가 미술작품 콜렉터를 위한 첫번째 가이드

Back in the day, art dealers like the great Leo Castelli and famed art critic Clement Greenberg helped us decide what was art and what was not.

In the absence of these luminary tastemakers, even the educated person can be at a loss as to how to build a collection.

This article is not a comprehensive guide, nor is is the final word on art collecting. It is designed to serve as a general guide for the person wishing to begin collecting art.
  1.
Decide on a medium. What are you drawn to? There was a time when painting was considered the superior medium for fine art. Now, there are more choices than ever. Sculpture and photography have always been popular. There's also digital art, collages and assemblages, glass, ceramic and many others. Contemporary art can incorporate several of these media, often in surprising and novel ways.
  2.
Visit art galleries. Also consider alternative art venues and open studio tours. Many talented artists have reasonable prices because they are considered emerging artists. Don't be an art snob. Go with your gut. Books on art history can be helpful, but are not absolutely necessary. Educate yourself. Look at lots and lots of art. Become an expert in what you like.
  3.
Think of collecting fine art as a pleasurable and rewarding hobby, not as an investment. One question certain to elicit an inner groan from a dealer is if you ask if the piece will go up in value. Dealers don't know the answer to that question. Don't listen to a dealer who says otherwise. Art prices rise in response to public demand, yet a high price alone is not a good indicator. In short, sometimes artwork is just overpriced. Researching the artist's career can be helpful in determining this.
  4.
Build your collection slowly. For your taste to develop properly, select pieces based on individual merit. Beware of the tendency to collect for the sake of collecting. This is known as "completionist syndrome". In this situation, you are so eager to collect that you fail to discern between what is good and what is just okay or even a crappy copy. Acquire quickly and you will tire quickly of this hobby.
  5.
Explore new realms. The heart of the collector is ever yearning. Over the years you may, as your palette develops sell of old pieces and acquire new ones. These might be very different from what you liked when you began. In this way, you become an active participant in what happens in the art world. Keeping this information in mind, collect to your heart's content. It can be enormously rewarding for the collector who discovered an artist when they were unknown and under appreciated.
