How do you make your beloved boat attractive to buyers and stand out from the crowd? Unfortunately, the answer is hard work. Many sailboats are neglected for years prior to the decision to sell. Don't force buyers to look past the dirt and mildew to see your beautiful yacht.

  1.

Survey the market for used sailboats. Sailing publications, boat dealers, marinas and sailing enthusiasts' Web sites all have lists of sailboats for sale. Compare prices for boats of a similar size, age and condition as yours.

  2.

Identify areas where your boat is commonly found, then advertise locally. Your boat will sell best where it is a known entity and already popular. Skip placing ads in regular newspapers unless your local paper routinely carries a lot of sailboat ads.

  3.

Include photos of your boat with any ad. A full or three-quarter profile shot is best. Some online bulletin boards let you include a variety of shots; take additional pictures of the interior and stern.

  4.

Be able to rattle off the facts about your boat. Know the overall length, year of construction, draft, sail area and displacement. Customers lose faith in sellers who can't answer basic questions.

  5.

Look for a racing fleet (a group of boats, identical in design, that get together to race) for your boat. Yacht clubs or boat dealers in the area know if a fleet exists and how to contact it. Your goal is to place an ad in the fleet organization's newsletter. Be sure to inquire about a national organization with additional advertising opportunities.

  6.

Boat prices vary widely, usually based on how well the boat is equipped, but also on appearance, recent overall maintenance, and condition of the sails. Be honest about how your boat ranks against others like it.

  7.

Empty everything off the boat, including seat cushions, anchor and fire extinguisher. Search all the compartments. Don't make a buyer dig through your junk.

  8.

Clean the boat. While everything is off, take a bucket of soapy water and a big sponge and go over the whole interior. Get rid of mildew, mold and rust stains. Clean the items that you removed from the boat. If you intend to sell them with the boat, return them to their proper storage compartment. Let everything dry completely before closing the boat back up.

  9.

Scrub the deck and cockpit with a stiff brush and soapy water. Oil any teak trim. Coil any loose lines. Check that the winches spin freely and all fittings operate. Oil any items that need it.

  10.

Check the lights and electrical systems. Be sure the engine runs and the batteries are fully charged. Repair any minor problems.

  11. Fold all the sails neatly and store them in sail bags, either on the boat or nearby where they can be examined.

  12.

If the boat is on land, be sure the bottom is clean. Scrub off any algae or barnacles. If the boat is in the water, use a long handled brush to remove any visible growth.

  13.

If the boat is in a marina, inform the harbor master that your boat is for sale. He or she may be able to direct potential buyers to your boat.

  14.

Be prepared to spend considerable time with prospective buyers. Some buyers will want to go for a test sail. You may also need to be present when a marine surveyor inspects the boat on behalf of a buyer.
